Iglesia Unida is a congregation in cooperation with the UCC (United Church of Christ). What does this relationship indicate?

The UCC is an association of churchs that share a mission, not a theology. That a church is UCC indicates that that church accepts the mission of struggling for justice based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The UCC is a group of free and autonomous churches. No UCC church can impose its theology on any other.

We have the goal of achieving unity between all the diverse Christian Churches, not a unity of thought, but a unity that comes through mutual acceptance in accord with the command of Christ that his disciples should love one another
(John 13:34).

John 17:22
"I have given them the glory that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one."

Here is the way it is explained by our national office:

The United Church of Christ embraces a theological heritage that affirms the Bible as the authoritative witness to the Word of God, the creeds of the ecumenical councils, and the confessions of the Reformation. The UCC has roots in the "covenantal" tradition—meaning there is no centralized authority or hierarchy that can impose any doctrine or form of worship on its members. Christ alone is Head of the church. We seek a balance between freedom of conscience and accountability to the apostolic faith. The UCC therefore receives the historic creeds and confessions of our ancestors as testimonies, but not tests of the faith.

For this reason we at Iglesia Unida in Chapel Hill study the Bible, take seriously the declarations of faith of the churches of the past, and afirm the liberty of each church to seek the most adequate way to live the gospel in its local context.
